What are the basic tech requirements for CFG courses?

To participate in Code First Girls courses, you will need a functional laptop or desktop computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux.

Chromebooks, iPads, and other tablets are not currently compatible with our course software and environment setups.

What should I do if I'm experiencing tech issues on my device?

If you run into technical issues while accessing your course or setting up your environment, try these quick steps first:

  1. Update your software: Ensure your operating system and web browsers are updated to the latest versions.
  2. Use Incognito Mode: Open Google Chrome in an Incognito / Private browsing window to rule out browser cache or extension conflicts.
  3. Switch to a computer: If you are trying to complete coursework on a mobile phone or tablet, please switch to a supported laptop or desktop.

If you continue to experience technical errors after trying these steps, please submit a ticket through the Community Support form. Please include a step-by-step description and screenshots (.jpg or .png) of the issue so we can help troubleshoot!

What laptop or computer should I buy for coding?

Any modern laptop or computer should be sufficient to run standard programming tools. If you are purchasing a new or used device, here are our recommended minimum specifications:

  • CPU: At least 2 CPU cores (a basic dual-core processor is enough to start; higher-end processors improve performance but aren't strictly required).
  • RAM (Memory): Minimum 4 GB of RAM.
  • Storage / Disk Space: At least 20 GB of free disk space for course environments and tools.
  • Operating System: Windows, macOS, or Linux (avoid Chromebooks, iPads, or Android tablets).

Where can I buy an affordable laptop or computer?

Finding affordable tech can be a challenge, but you don't need a brand-new device to learn to code!

We recommend checking online marketplaces like eBay or certified refurbishers for second-hand devices. To ensure you receive a reliable device:

  • Prioritise sellers with high positive ratings and a strong sales history.
  • Read the product description carefully to confirm the laptop powers on, includes a charger, and meets the minimum RAM and storage requirements.
